Chris Tiu needs MY [our] support!

HAHA. here i go again. :))

Chris Tiu is nominated in the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards Philippines 2008!! woohoo!! haha.

here's what he said:

Before I continue with part 2 of my China trip, I would like to make a short plug. I have been receiving text messages from my friends informing me that I have been nominated for the Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards for favorite athlete. At first it didn't strike me as something that's a big deal, but then I realized that this is the first time to have a Philippine edition and that I was nominated alongside my very own idols like Lea Salonga and even my co-host Manny Pacquiao. It would be such an honor to be able to stand on stage with those other nominees but that won't be possible with Manny since we're both nominated in the same category. Anyways, awarding will be on November 29 at the Aliw Theater.

Here's how to vote: Voting is only until November 15. I believe you can vote again and again haha!
1) go to http://kca.nicksplat.com then click vote

For Chris’ Sake
CONVERSATIONS With Ricky Lo
Sunday, October 5, 2008

Basic facts about Chris Tiu, shooting guard and team captain of Ateneo’s Blue Eagles which recently regained the UAAP (University Athletic Association of the Philippines) crown after a six-year “dry season,” beating fierce rival La Salle’s Green Archers:

• He stands 5’11” and weighs 170 lbs.
• He’s a Cancerian (July 15, 1985).
• He has been playing with the Blue Eagles for five years (since 2003), taking time off only when he went to France (and stayed there for six months) as an exchange student.
• He comes from a conservative family; his mother is an Opus Dei and his father, although not officially an Opus Dei, is a co-operator.
• His favorite fruit is banana (“The big, green one”) and he loves to eat Chinese spinach, lettuce and all-green veggies (“I’m a salad-lover”).
• He sleeps with four pillows (a long one, two regular rectangles and a small one) and his favorite sleep wear is basketball shorts and T-shirt (“Never in the nude”).
• Part of his body that needs improvement: His legs and hamstrings.
• Part of body that’s most vulnerable: “Not just one part but many parts. I have sinusitis because I broke my nose during a game, so it’s crooked. I have bad eyes, so I wear contact lenses. Maraming problema. Hehehehehe!”
• What he does when he admires a girl: “I give her a meaningful smile...discreetly!”

And what else do you want to know about Chris Tiu?
A lot. Stay tuned.

Was winning the UAAP championship your ultimate goal as a Blue Eagle?
“Yes. I really wanted to win the championship... for my school.”

How did you prepare for the games?
“Grabe ang training namin! We competed in pre-season tournaments. We also went to L.A. for training under the AIP basketball camp. We were there for two weeks. It also gave us a chance to bond a lot.”

Was it a “secret”? Didn’t the Green Archers know about it?
“I guess they knew; everybody knew, because it was in the news. The training was rigorous and intense. We had team-building sessions...you know, to be able to open up...so my teammates and I became closer to one another.”

Winning the championship was a big relief for you, right?
“Yeah. Sobra! The last time Ateneo was champion was six years ago. We were always there, kaya lang parating second place or third place...parating kumakapos ng konti.”

The rivalry between the Blue Eagles and the Green Archers was very intense. Is it true that they hired a bodyguard for you because you were getting death threats?
“No death threats, no game-fixing, no syndicate, no death threats. I don’t know where all those rumors came from. All I have is my driver na sumasama-sama sa akin wherever I go para hindi naman ako mag-isa. Sometimes, I go around by myself; sometimes, with my friends or teammates.”

Of course, even before the UAAP championship, you were already a Crush ng Bayan, Idol ng Bayan. I suppose the number of your female fans multiplied by the hundreds after the Blue Eagles became champion. How do you handle them?
“Actually, hindi ko rin alam, eh.”

Some fans could be, you know, aggressive. How do you cope with them?
“They don’t become too aggressive naman. Maybe, they are aggressive in the sense that, you know, ‘Puede pa-autograph; puede pa-picture?’ Some would ask for my phone number.”

Do you give them the wrong phone number? Hahahaha!
“No naman. I just don’t give my phone number.”

Doesn’t your girlfriend get insecure, especially now that every girl is dreaming about you?
“Hmmmmm...”

How do you assure her that she’s the only one?
“Ahhhh...Well, through my actions.”

How are you like off-court? You are such a busybody. Aside from your studies and basketball, you also personally attend to your food stall at Ateneo. Don’t you relax?
“I read books and I watch DVDs at home. Sometimes I go out of town...to Tagaytay. But now, I can’t do that. Wala nang masyadong oras, eh.”

What kind of books do you read?
“Suspense books, business books, books about leadership. But I can’t finish reading a book; it’s always bitin. The last one I read was Heroic Leadership which is about how the Society of Jesus works.”

And what kind of movies do you watch?
“Action, suspense. I don’t really like romantic-comedies. Cheesy! Ayoko nang ganoon.”

But never daw sexy movies?
“Ah, hindi, hindi! Never!”

Is it true that you haven’t watched a sexy movie all your life?
“Never! Nasusuka ako sa mga ganoon.”

Really!?!
“Yeah. Nasusuka talaga ako sa mga ganoon!”

One time daw when you were a teenager, your friends had fun watching a porno movie but you ran away. Totoo ba ‘yon?
“Yeah. That’s true! Umalis ako. Nandiri ako, eh. I went to another room...”

...and there, you said the Rosary?
“Yeah!”

Is it hard living up to your spotlessly-clean image?
“No naman. Because I don’t have to put up a front; I don’t have to pretend. ‘Yon at ‘yon naman talaga ako, eh.”

So you are aware of your responsibility as a role model. Whether you like it or not, you are a role model. Aren’t you on-guard all the time? Hindi ba restricting ang ganoon, suffocating?
“Well, I’m very careful with my action kasi everything I do now is magnified. So I’m careful that I don’t send the wrong signal to the people and the fans who look up to me. But hindi naman ako nahihirapan kasi I think I’m naturally...”

...wholesome! Talaga bang santung-santo ka?
“Hindi naman. Sana, kung puede maging santo. Pero hindi ganoon kadali, eh.”

You have two shows (on GMA), Believe It or Not and Pinoy Records (with Manny Pacquiao as co-host). Are you comfortable now in front of the camera?
“I’m enjoying it na. Yes, I’m more comfortable now. It’s something different and I never thought I’d never go into it. Masaya naman pala! And the show (Believe It Or Not) is very interesting. Pinapanood ko talaga siya all the time.”

What about acting in a movie? Is it a possibility?
“There have been offers but so far...I don’t think so.”

Don’t you want to follow in the footsteps of your predecessors who have tried acting (such as Bobby Jaworski, Freddie Webb, Atoy Co, Alvin Patrimonio, Bong Alvarez, Jerry CodiƱera, Yoyong Martirez, etc.)?
“If ever siguro, cameo role lang.”

As a priest, maybe?
“No naman. As myself, as a basketball player.”

What about the kind of commercials that you agree to do? What are your criteria, conditions?
“Siempre, ‘yung mga wholesome product. (Like Nesvita which he endorses with Derek Ramsay and Will Devaughn. — RFL)”

Definitely not cigarets or hard drinks?
“Hindi siguro!”

And especially not, horrors, condoms!
“Definitely not!!!”

At what age did you start playing basketball?
“When I was 10 years old, at the park with my neighbors.”

Any basketball stars whom you look up to as inspiration and role models?
“Steve Nash and Michael Jordan.”

You are very competitive, whether in business, in academics or in sports. How did you get that competitiveness?
“I guess I got it from my upbringing and from my Jesuit education which always emphasizes sa pag-gawa ng magis (He spelled it pa. — RFL). Magis means doing things with excellence...doing every little thing in your everyday life with love. With passion... walang room for mediocrity. So I think I live up to it. So whatever I do, kailangan walang mediocrity. So whatever I do, I want to be the best that I can be.”

Are you graduating this month?
“The first course I took was Management Engineering. I’m now taking up Applied Math and Finance. I don’t know if I’m finished with that na.”

Oh, I heard you are graduating with honors?
“Well, it’s an honors course. Pero walang graduating with honors.”

Will you continue playing with the Blue Eagles?
“No more playing na. The championship games were my last na. Five years lang ang maximum number of playing, eh.”

So you’re saying goodbye to the UAAP?
“Yeah. Goodbye na talaga.”

After the UAAP, what next?
“I’m not sure yet.”

I heard that you’re getting offers right and left to join the PBL (Philippine Basketball League) and the PBA (Philippine Basketball Association) Games?
“Offers? From PBL, marami. Pero from the PBA, I don’t know yet.”

If and when, what PBA team would you choose?
“I don’t know yet pa nga, eh. I’m still waiting for a sign. I also want to try going pro. At least I can say that for once in my life, nag-pro ako. Otherwise, I’d just quit basketball.”

Can you say goodbye to basketball for good?
“Yes, I can.”

And what would you focus on?
“My business.”

grr.

i'm such a fan!!!! HAHAHA!! :))

pero kung kay Chris Tiu na rin lang, WHY NOT?!

Why there's a color called "Blue Green"

from Charles Tiu's multiply.

an objective view on the Ateneo-La Salle rivalry.

---------

There's no difference between Green and Blue.

Seriously, apart from the physical properties, there isn't really anything different between these two colors, or for that matter DLSU and ADMU.
I am probably one of the few people who thinks that this rivalry is over the line. Apart from the usual battling of the players in the court, a lot of extra curricular activities are going on, from the fans bashing one another, their genuine hatred (for some at least) for one another, looking for reasons to make fun of the other and stuff like that. I wish people just left all the emotions on the court and let go of them right after the game (okay i admit i may be guilty!). Of course when i say this, it doesn't apply to all of the supporters, there still are those sensible ones. Maybe it's just me, since i don't believe that people need to fight one another. I feel that the cheering during the games get out of hand sometimes, especially when it becomes so personal. Like during game 2 of the series, some die-hard Lasalista shouts terrorist to Rabeh! I mean come on! what did he ever do to you to deserve being called that? And Ateneans who always love to make fun of Walsham, Rico or Cardona and others where's the breeding there? And when people shout Tangina Mo, its like what did my mom ever do to you?! As a player, you have to learn how to block it all out but man, sometimes it's gotta hurt too. But of course i've got to make it clear that not everyone does this. It's probably just a few of those super crazy die-hard fans!
I've been thinking about stuff and i realized that these two schools are no different from one another. Both schools are constantly looking for things against the other and when they do find something, it's like a time bomb waiting to explode. There will be non-stop taunting and teasing and all those stuff, and it goes back and forth. Let's see, Ateneo was having a blast by making fun of La Salle for their mistake in the spelling of La Salle during the cheering competition (i've always thought this was pointless. gee!) and they had their share of cheering wrong spelling! They've also had the pleasure of making fun of La Salle for their "cheating" (fielding ineligible players) and they've been saying bad stuff about La Salle for that. La Salle on the other hand, have had the pleasure of boasting their numerous championships through the years and they have this new bonfire incident to take against Ateneo (I must say this was a stupid move by some alumni who did it. Disgrace. To whoever did it, imagine if it were our own players? That would be below the belt)
La Salle calls Ateneo mayabang. Ateneo calls La Salle bobo. I don't know what the basis for this is because i believe that the education of both schools are equally as good (Yes ateneans, gotta admit La Salle has a helluva good engineering course, plus accounting too!) even though the rankings may differ (before La Salle was higher but now it's Ateneo) and as for the mayabang claim of La Salle, i'm sure there are tons of mayabang people from DLSU too.
Ateneo makes fun of Brian Ilad for throwing a punch during a game, gee could they have forgotten that our very own beloved LA Tenorio once threw a punch too, (a sucker cheap-shot punch for that matter) against La Salle pa!
Ateneans despise La Salle players like Maierhofer, Yeo, Cardona, Malabes and the other "mayabang" ones. La Salle despise Ateneo players like Salamat, Buenafe, Villanueva and those others they call mayabang too! But i bet one thing is for sure, as long as those players perform on the court, their own schools would love them no matter who they are (as long as they don't do anything to ruin the school's image) and they would stick with them. So i bet if those players changed teams and were playing for the other school, like lets say Rico played for Ateneo, it would be the other way around. Ateneo would love him and La Salle would hate him! haha that's just the way it works.
Players have to work hard and prove themselves to gain the respect of both schools. Ateneo and La Salle both have certain players that they like to make fun of or criticize (im talking about the fans) but of course once they do well then it all ends. I remember hearing non-stop criticism before for Rabeh, Ford Arao, even Jai Reyes and their very favorite Chris Tiu. But where are those naysayers now? Haha. I also knnow from my La Salle friends that they do this too. Kish Co was always being criticized until he showed up big and played well during last year's finals. People from DLSU keep on critcizing Walsham, Malabes, Ferdinand and others too. I remember they used to criticize my good friend Ty Tang back when he was still a rookie (i still used to root for La Salle cause of him hehe until Chris went to Ateneo) but after delivering a championship on his final year, i doubt they have anything bad to say about him anymore! So see? The way we act and treat players are alike! After all, we are all Filipinos still!
When Ateneo loses they blame the referees, when La salle loses, they blame the referees too. Both communities come up with really good explanations as to how the officials made them lose, but the bottom line is the outcome won't be changed. Both schools accuse each other of sourgraping when they lose.
I thought all the while that it was just Ateneo saying that DLSU buys players and gives alot of stuff under the table. I also thought na it was only Ateneo accusing DLSU of having double standards for the players, finding ways for them to enter the school even if they fail the entrance test and giving alot of special privileges and stuff like that. Apparently, as i stumbled upon some DLSU thread, i found that they too accuse Ateneo of exactly the same thing. I found it funny. I mean, both sides would go on debating and finding evidence to prove that they are right and rest assured that they will both defend themselves and claim that this doesnt happen in their school. But i bet that it does happen, in both schools! Funny though that the threads of both schools accuse the other about the same thing! Amusing and amazing.
I know right now that DLSU is having the last laugh especially after the bonfire incident. They can make fun of our breeding. But Ateneo has been saying the same thing through the years (not coming out for the championship awarding?). I don't think it will ever stop but i do wish that it were less volatile! Sure that might take the fun out of the UAAP, but it would hurt less people too!
And one more common thing is that both schools love to generalize. When one Atenean makes a bad goof-up (bonfire!) its generalized to the whole community! When one Lasallite makes a mistake or when there is a bad incident (awarding, illegitimate players) it is generalized to the whole community too! And i personally think that it is not fair. No matter what sort of education each school gives to their students, one way or another, there will always be those immature boneheads who deviate from the norm. And they are the ones who do these stupid acts that unfortunately people automatically generalize to the school. So no matter how much Ateneans love to say that they are superior over DLSU when it comes to education, i do not believe that one bit! (for the record, i have never made fun of DLSU when it comes to that wrong spelling incident, as well as i am never personal to any of their players when i cheer. I cheer for my school, not against another school.)
On a side note, i must say that i am deeply disappointed and embarrassed by that bonfire incident. I would like to apologize to the La Salle community for that act. But as i said in the preceding paragraph, the action of one alumni (who wrote their names on the wood) must and should not be generalized to that of the whole school. I believe Fr. Ben was very angry upon finding out about it and he will issue an official letter of apology to DLSU. I was talking to Rabeh about it and he said that yeah, it really was below the belt and we both agreed that if that were done to our players we would be outraged too, so i understand where the DLSU community is coming from, but learn to direct your anger please. It is not the team who did it nor is it any school official/administration. Oh yeah, and regarding that article on Rabeh almost transferring to LSGH but didn't because he didn't pass; well, his comment to that was that it was "a bunch of BS" :)
So there you have it, i don't know maybe it's just me who sees it that way. I'm sure alot of people will beg to differ. Unfortunately for you, if you want to beat me up for writing this, you'd have to wait til next year since i'm in far far away land :)
One thing i do know is that no matter what each school says about the other and no matter what wrong actions the school may have done, a Lasallite will always be proud to be a Lasallite and an Atenean will always be proud to be an Atenean too.

how to have fun - the Ateneo way?

when i first saw this, i was like "WOAH. totoo ba 'to? Ateneo gagawin 'to?"

(photos taken from http://the-wawam-file.blogspot.com/2008/10/ateneo-bonfire-celebration-of-5-wins.html)

you must be kidding me.

but yes, it's true. :|

this was during the Ateneo Bonfire last Sept. 30, 2008.

written on the wood are names of the DLSU players (on the picture: Mangahas, Barua, Malabes, Villanueva, Rico 'MaierFINGER' (?), and shit, even CASIO.). There's also a Pumaren, Three Blind Mice, UE Red Warriors, and others which i can't read (can you?). and i assume meron pa yan sa likod.

unang-una, matagal akong nagpaka-lungkot dahil hindi ako nakapunta sa bonfire. feeling ko ang dami kong na-miss, like maybe seeing Chris Tiu in person? having his autograph, taking a picture with him, or whatever.

i'm a fan, YES. not only of Chris Tiu, but of the whole Ateneo Blue Eagles. and maybe not just of the varsity team, but of the whole Ateneo community.

MATAAS ANG TINGIN KO SA MGA TAGA-ATENEO.

siguro dahil yun ang second choice ko after UP nung kumuha ako ng entrance exam? i dunno. basta feeling ko iba sila sa IBA.

then biglang makikita ko 'to? sa CELEBRATION nila. yes, they're celebrating for their winS. di lang sa Seniors Men's Basketball.

seriously, i got really, really, really disappointed. i mean di ba, yes you have the right to burn wood for YOUR bonfire, in YOUR field, for YOUR celebration. pero why do you have to write the names of the other team's players? para sunugin sila at ipamukha niyo pa lalo na natalo niyo sila?

at isa pa, BAKIT PATI UE RED WARRIORS KASAMA DYAN?! next to the UP Fighting Maroons, Ateneo Blue Eagles at UE Red Warriors ang sinusuportahan ko. so hindi ko lang matanggap na pati UE kasama. BAKIT?!

AT!!!! BAKIT PATI SI CASIO?! grr naman. you could've spared him. :|

i personally don't like the DLSU Green Archers that much. between ADMU and DLSU, i can answer you right away that i'm for Ateneo. their rivalry, yes it's fun din in a way. pero i think what they did was kinda below the belt na.

they could've just burned a mascot of a Green Archer with an arrow or whatever. they could've burned a huge banner with the 'De La Salle Green Archers' written on it. they could've just burned the trees, because they're green. or the grass. or basta kahit anong green! pero bakit kelangan pang isulat yung individual names, di ba? it's just rude, i think.

sige nga, isipin mo, ikaw, yung pangalan mo (or surname) sinusunog in front of thousands (?) of people. without any reason at all. trip lang. and they're making fun of it. what would you feel?

sure, as a team, go ahead and make fun of them, the hell i care. pero yung mismong mga tao na ang titirahin mo, well that's a different story. :|

btw, there was one reply posted in the uaapseason71 group in multiply:

well, if that's the case, then wala. awayin na lang natin yung kung sino mang bangag ang gumawa niyan. adik eh. haha.

but still, after seeing all these pictures..... i'm still sad because i missed the bonfire!!

and i missed MY Chris Tiu!!!
