UP vs. FEU
70 - 71
Ngunit habang tumatagal, lalo nilang pinatunayan na "this is for real". Totoong gusto nilang manalo.
UP, FEU, tas UP uli, tas FEU na naman. MASAYA.
KULANG PA.
may nag-freethrow sa UP. naging 70-71. and that was it. END.
Go Lopez! :))
and of course, Martin Reyes!! SO NICE.
oh well.
Talo UP, pero keri lang.
Talo UP, Pero Masaya Ako.

Buzzer-beating putback lifts DLSU past Growling Tigers
by Josef Ramos
ROUND TWO of De La Salle versus Santo Tomas proved to be as pulsating as the first matchup –but produced the same victor.
Maui Villanueva’s buzzer-beating putback led the Green Archers, playing without coach Franz Pumaren, to an 81-79 escape win against the Growling Tigers in the 71st UAAP men’s basketball tournament last August 28, 2008 at the Araneta Coliseum.
Playmaker LA Revilla missed a lay-up in the dying seconds but the former University of the Philippines Integrated School standout was at the right place at the right time to push the defending champions to a 9-3 record and a tie for second-place with Far Eastern University.
“I thought we’re heading to overtime but the replay footage shows that I beat the clock,” said Villanueva. “This game means a lot for me because I pulled my team to victory.”
Seldom-used rookie guard Emilian Vargas, a transferee from Emilio Aguinaldo College, capped off a 5-0 UST run by scoring off a drive with 5.5 ticks left on the clock.
UST coach Pido Jarencio then called his last timeout, which gave deputy DLSU coach Jack Santiago of enough time to regroup for the winning play.
“I’m having sleepless nights because of thinking about this game,” said Santiago, who temporarily took over Pumaren’s job. “I just followed the system of coach Franz and that was okay.”
Santiago, who will still pilot De La Salle in the last two games of the elimination round, handled the coaching chores as Pumaren is presently in Tehran, Iran for the Philippine Youth squad’s campaign in the FIBA Asia Under-18 Basketball Championships for Junior Men.
Veteran JV Casio led La Salle with 29 points, while Peejay Barua poured in 17 markers and Rico Maierhofer tallied 16 and grabbed 16 rebounds for the Green Archers to offset the huge 28-point and 20-rebound performance of reigning MVP Jervy Cruz.
“I salute our young guns for playing great today,” said Casio. “They will replace us when we leave this school. It is really great to see their determination and desire to win.”
The loss relegates UST to 5-7 and two games behind University of the East for the last Final Four spot. The España outfit has to win its remaining two games – including a showdown with UE – and hope the Warriors lose their remaining assignments to forge a playoff with them for the last semifinal slot.
The scores:
De La Salle 81 – Casio 29, Barua 17, Maierhofer 16, Villanueva 6, Mangahas 6, Revilla 4, Webb 2, Ferdinand 1, Atkins 0, Malabes 0, Walsham 0.
UST 79 – Cruz 28, Ababou 15, Mirza 11, Vargas 9, Bautista 5, Camus 3, Canlas 3, Cuan 3, Allera 2, Fenequito 0, Fortuna 0, Gile 0, Taylor 0.
Quarter scores: 15-13; 34-36; 54-47; 81-79

walang koneksyon yung movie nila KC at Richard dito. :|
HIMALA.
haha. eh kasi, pag nanalo ang UST dito, delikado UE. at HINDI PWEDE YUN.
kaya kahit mainit dugo ko sa DLSU, no choice.
at hindi nga nila ako binigo! nanalo sila!
For the First Time din, ngayon ko lang na-appreciate si Casio!! seryoso. kasi dati, tuwing may game sila, lagi ko siyang binabara eh. kasi, aminado akong magaling siya. at siya ang laging sagabal sa mga teams na gusto ko. TINIK!
PANALO SILA!!
pero, pero, pero.
yung nagsilbing coach nila ngayon, nawindang ako. haha.

History, Toughness and Ateneo Basketball
by jesse at 8/27/2008 01:41:00 PM
IT WASN’T that long ago when Ateneo de Manila University seemed invincible and all-powerful in the elimination round of the UAAP.
The year was 2006, and the Blue Eagles looked to have capitalized on the absence of archrival De La Salle University. The Blue and White won all but two matches in that season’s 12-game regular season format. An eight-point defeat to University of Santo Tomas and a three-point heartbreaker at the hands of University of East failed to derail Ateneo’s crusade toward the number one spot.
The rest, they say, is history, a history that the Ateneo faithful would want to forget. The Blue Eagles blew a critical 1-0 advantage in the Finals against a Growling Tiger quintet that finished dead last after the first round of elimination games.
History, they say too, is written by victors. Hence, everyone seems to have forgotten the splendid numbers current pro JC Intal put up that year. His 18.2-point, 7.6-rebound average in 16 games was overshadowed by a catastrophic 5-of-21 shooting clip in that atrocious, 76-74 Game 3 Finals loss on October 2, 2006.
Intal’s partners in crime that year, Macky Escalona and Doug Kramer, aren’t enshrined in the memories of Ateneans in the same way that the likes of Enrico Villanueva, Rich Alvarez and LA Tenorio are. The latter group steered the Hail Mary Squad to its last title back in 2002, while Intal and co., well, lost it.
Such has been the harsh reality of Ateneo basketball since that memorable 2002 title team. Just last season, the Blue Eagles were a win away from the number two spot in the stepladder post-season, an advantage that would have proved invaluable against a La Salle squad that Ateneo had already defeated twice in the eliminations. Instead of securing that advantage, the Blue Eagles stumbled upon an already knocked out National University quintet, which blew out Ateneo by 15 in a pivotal third quarter run to hold on to a 96-88 win that relegated the Blue and White to a virtual best-of-three showdown with their nemeses.
Sure, Ateneo, which lost all three games to DLSU by at least 17 points before it got suspended for fielding in academically-ineligible cagers in 2005, was much more competitive against the Taft outfit in 2007. Norman Black’s wards lost two games to (and actually won three against) the Green Archers by a total of six points in Season 70. Problem is, the Blue Eagles lost the games that mattered.
The Blue Eagles’ current 11-win standing ties their 2003 record for most number of wins in the elimination round this decade, and is two wins away from tying the school-record 13 set in 1987. ’87 was a championship year, while 2003 wasn’t.
So how are the chips going to fall this year? With the way things are going, a run at the title looks to pass through the blue (not maroon) side of Katipunan and not Taft. A neutral observer will be quick to point that out, but a student or alumnus/alumna from Ateneo will rationally, thanks to history, think otherwise.
After Gec Chia’s backbreaking jumper against UE in the sudden-death, Final Four matchup in 2002, which sent Ateneo to the finals and eventually ultimate glory, luck nor logic hasn’t gone the Eagles’ path. The 149-year-old academic institution was expected to repeat in 2003, but lost to FEU. The year after, it lost ace gunner Larry Fonacier to a knee tear, tore the opposition apart by sweeping the first round of eliminations – only to lose six of their remaining nine games.
Season 71 seems to be a completely different story. Slotman Rabeh Al-Hussaini is averaging 17.8 points and 9.8 rebounds this season. His MVP-like numbers have surpassed the total number of points and rebounds he’s posted in all his playing years – 2005 to 2007 – combined. No player in recent UAAP or even collegiate hoops history has significantly upped his numbers this way.
Ateneo de Manila’s starting quintet of Al-Hussaini, Chris Tiu, Jai Reyes, Nonoy Baclao and Ryan Buenafe is the league’s highest-scoring first five. Even more surprising is that the Blue Eagles are atop the league as far as fastbreak points are concerned – not bad for a team criticized for its inept running game after the Joel Banal years – and commit the least number of turnovers a game.
Perhaps most important this season is what evades the numbers. The Blue Eagles are playing tough. Gone are the days when on-court bullies like Jerwin Gaco would elbow and shove the likes of Martin Quimson (2004) without reaction, Joseph Yeo trash-talking the Ateneo coaching staff (2004 as well) and getting a technical for it, Ryan Araña dancing in front of Eman Nazareno (2005) and Fil-American Jeff Valeriano of UST getting in Alvarez’s face (1999).
I am not advocating any form of violence, but the fact is that mental and even physical toughness are (really) prerequisites for a championship run. Be it trash-talking – something NABRO referees have absurdly cracked down on – a hard but clean foul or a nudge in the middle of a screen, an attitude is needed on-court.
The likes of Buenafe and spitfire Eric Salamat give Ateneo just that. Salamat’s tongue and multitude of warnings for “trash-talking” and “resentment to the call” are actually good for a school that’s been considered nice and soft since Banal, Villanueva and Wesley Gonzales bolted for the pros.
In 2002, Gonzales and Mac Cardona slugged it out at the South Gate of the Araneta Coliseum. I asked Banal what really transpired that day. He said, “I told Wesley to just finish whatever needed to be finished. So I let him get it on with Cardona.” That year, Ateneo defeated the Green Archers for the championship. This example may be quite extreme (and arguably shouldn’t happen anymore), but this is what the “never back down” mentality can give any squad.
Before the season started, I personally picked De La Salle to win the title over Ateneo. My main reason was that the Green Archers play to beat Ateneo and the rest of the league for that matter, whereas the Blue Eagles play not to lose. The Blue and White’s “One Big Fight” cry was always outmatched – on the hardwood at least – by La Salle’s “Wanna Fight” attitude. Fortunately for Ateneans, the attitude is there.

UP won, AGAIN!
by jesse at 8/22/2008 01:55:00 PM
UP is now at 3-8.
akalain mo yun, naka-tatlo pa!!! haha.
just when we thought they could never win another game again this season (aminin!), they proved us wrong! they did win another one for us! YEY!
although...........................
but anyway, at least UP took advantage of it and utilized every chance they got to score more points. grabeh ba naman. halftime, 38-14. hello?! iisipin mo ba naman yun, UP naka-24 points na lamang sa kalaban! and obviously, Adamson talaga may problema. 14 points ba naman eh, after 20 minutes. as in malaking HELLO?!
but anyway, as usual, Martin Reyes did a good job. as he always do.
73-42.
31-point margin! highest ata this season, i guess?
ironically, before yesterday's game, ang highest pa ata ay 30 points. nung UE vs. UP. haha. ganyan talaga, bawi-bawian lang yan. hahaha. :))
scores per quarter: 17-10, 38-14, 54-19, 73-42 :)
oh well, oh well.
UP Fight ever!!!!
=======================================================
2nd game: Ateneo Blue Eagles vs. UE Red Warriors
oh no... ang hirap mamili. kanino ako kakampi? i like them both.
His 3-point shot sent their game to overtime!! woohoo! extended excitement.
sadly, in the end, may nanalo na talaga. Ateneo.
BUT NO.
(haha, OA.)
YEHEY!
YEHEY!
YEHEY!
UP! UP! UP!
pinaiyak ako ni Chris Tiu!
by jesse at 8/21/2008 10:45:00 PM
waah!! huhuhu talaga.. naiiyak ako.. :((
ganto kasi, sa blog niya (na naka-subscribe ako sa RSS feeds. haha. stalker much?). may pinost siya kanina na parang trivia na guessing game. eto o:
BEFORE THERE WAS CHRIS TIU (by Simon Paterno)
He was a 5'10" guard with a deadly-accurate jumpshot. He was muscular and scrappy; he seemed to be involved in some of the most physical plays since it was not his nature to back down. And he had ice in his veins. He had a penchant for hitting game-winners in the biggest contests.
During his time, the NCAA had champions for both the first and second rounds, with the two champions meeting for a best of three series for the crown. If a team won both rounds, they were automatically champion. With the first round championship on the line, he hit a game-winning jumpshot at the buzzer to give the Blue Eaglets a sure seat in the finals. At the championship game, he made a game-winning steal against the San Sebastian Staglets, in the instant the opposing guard glanced at the scoreboard to check the clock for a potentially game-winning offensive, and hit the lay-up as time expired. 70-68. He didn't bother using the backboard. He just fed the ball gracefully into the ring and the net barely moved. The blue half of the Rizal Memorial Coliseum exploded while the yellow half was stunned.
He moved up to the seniors and joined one of the most talented Blue Eagle teams of any college era. They won a couple of championships.
So, who is he?
P.S. I will give a special prize to the first one who gets it right :) ----> eto ang problema ko. hahaha. joke. :))
HELP ME, PLEASE!!!
hahaha.. ayoko na... tulong.
EDIT: oh my... nasagot na. haha. CHITO NARVASA is the answer. swerte nung unang nakasagot. kaya lang ANONYMOUS siya dun eh. haha! :))

OMB orders CD-R King to pay P1.5M for illegal importation
by jesse at 8/18/2008 09:47:00 PM
By Erwin Oliva
INQUIRER.net
02/05/2008
MANILA, Philippines -- The Optical Media Board (OMB) has ordered CD-R King, one of the country’s biggest suppliers of optical media and related technology products, to pay P1.5 million in administrative penalties.
This was after the OMB, through the Bureau of Customs, found that the company was allegedly importing optical media discs without proper import permits from the agency, according to Cyrus Valenzuela, officer-in-charge of legal service division of OMB, in an interview.
The OMB sent its order Tuesday to CD-R King, informing them of their administrative violation of provisions of Republic Act 9239, or the Optical Media Act of 2003.
CD-R King is a registered company allowed by the OMB to import blank, rewritable optical discs. Valenzuela said that the OMB is also seeking the cancellation of the license of CD-R King to sell optical media in the country. CD-R King, however, still has a chance to appeal to OMB about the cancellation of its license, the government executive said.
The OMB has asked the CD-R King to produce a report of optical media discs they have brought into the country.
“They were ordered to give their inventory for the past three years The law requires them to maintain inventory of up to five years,” the government executive said.
The Bureau of Customs seized optical media discs on January 21 allegedly being imported by CD-R King, which OMB later found to be lacking proper import permits.
Coincidentally, OMB has recently conducted its “validation inspection” to verify a tip it received that the same company was using unlicensed software in its operations in the country.
“We were disappointed to find that CD-R King might be using pirated software in their operations,” said Atty. Rosendo Meneses, Executive Director of the Optical Media Board, in a separate interview.
OMB is now verifying the software inspected in CD-R King branches if they’re indeed legitimate software, the government executive said.
At least 20 agents of the OMB were sent to branches of CD-R King, namely SM Fairview, Park Square, MRT Ayala Station, Starmall, SM Marilao, Trinoma, SM Megamall and SM Valenzuela.
The OMB’s inspection sought to verify allegations that CD-R King was using pirated software, the agency said. This was also after they’ve conducted their own surveillance of the company.
Valenzuela said CD-R King is given until end of the week to show that they were not using any unlicensed software.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i know this was like so long ago na. but wala lang, ngayon ko lang nabasa eh. magagawa mo ba? haha.

UAAP Men's Basketball First Round Awards
by jesse at 8/13/2008 07:48:00 PM
So many things have happened during the first five weeks of the UAAP season, with close games and number of crowds to non-stop controversies and off-court incidents and speculations.
Last night, we listed our first round awardees in the NCAA but now is the turn of the UAAP to get some citations in time for the start of the second round action.
Most Valuable Player: Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Ateneo Blue Eagles
While Jervy Cruz is leading the pack in the statistical points' race after the first round, Al-Hussaini has made a surprising performance for the league-leading Blue Eagles. The Fil-Kuwaiti standout is averaging close to double-figures at 14.6 points and 9.9 rebounds.
Perhaps the best output of the first round came from him after scoring 33 points and 20 rebounds that saw him score 18 of the team's 20 points at one point of the contest versus FEU. Too bad they lost but still, it is one of the single best individual outputs in the league.
Honorable Mention: JV Casio (La Salle), Dylan Ababou (UST), Rico Maierhofer (La Salle). Jervy Cruz (UST)
====================================================
Most 'Malamya' Player: Marcy Arellano, UE Red Warriors
Arellano was expected to put up a strong season for UE after a strong stint with the PBL's Burger King Whoppers. But thus far, the only things he can do are his 8.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 4.1 assists numbers.
His shooting, which has been his main weapon since earning Rookie of the Year honors in 2004, has been off and good thing James Martinez and rookie Paul Zamar are hitting well from the outside. It would be interesting to see how he will fair up come the second round.
Bote Na Lang 'Di Ako Na-Mention: JR Cawaling (FEU), Khasim Mirza (UST), Bader Malabes (La Salle), Jerick Canada (Adamson)
=====================================================
Rookie of the First Round: Ryan Buenafe, Ateneo Blue Eagles
Undoubtedly the best rookie of the first round and the former San Sebastian Staglet is as good as advertised, averaging 8.9 points (tops among rookies) in 21 minutes of action.
He doesn’t play like a rookie and has a much higher maturity to go with it.
The problem though is that teams have learned to respect Buenafe and probably he has also been affected by the hype that surrounded him. But nonetheless, if he improves his game in the coming games or even in the next few years, he’ll be one hell of a player.
Honorable Mention: Maui Villanueva (La Salle), Paul Zamar (UE), Clark Bautista (UST), Jeric Fortuna (UST)
=====================================================
Coach of the First Round: Glenn Capacio, FEU Tamaraws
The Tamaraws are off to their best UAAP start since probably the 2005 championship season. Capacio has made Benedict Fernandez into a potent scorer while making Aldrech Ramos and Riel Cervantes a huge presence in the pivot. And when the Baracael incident ensued, he coached the team through the distractions that earned them a tie with La Salle for second place (although they were stunned by winless NU last Sunday).
Honorable Mention: Norman Black (Ateneo), Franz Pumaren (La Salle)
===================================================
Stat Line of the First Round: Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Ateneo Blue Eagles
Al-Hussaini was truly unstoppable against FEU scoring 33 points and 20 rebounds. And the thing is, he didn’t dominate the way usual offensive-oriented big man would do, he just grabbed the offensive boards, moved around the court and the points came. It’s just a travesty that Al-Hussaini got no support whatsoever from the rest of his teammates and lost by six points.
Honorable Mention: Jervy Cruz (26 points, 22 rebounds vs UE), Peejay Barua (26 points, 6-for-8 3pt shooting vs NU), Benedict Fernandez (24 points, 8-for-13 shooting, six rebounds vs UST)
====================================================
Quote of the First Round: Glenn Capacio, FEU Tamaraws
"Basta buhay lang si Macmac, para na kaming nagchampion," Capacio said twice in their two wins following the Mac Baracael shooting. Maybe this line would be used every often if in case they win a UAAP title.
Honorable Mention: FEU's Anton Montinola making a "*" comment on DLSU's win against them in relation to referee Bryan Tabanag’s suspension, Franz Pumaren's countering Montinola's comments (which can be read on GreenArchers.ph, and why we in the print didn't make a story out of it? Because it might and eventually could turn into an ugly verbal war)
=====================================================
Game of the First Round: FEU Tamaraws vs UE Red Warriors (July 26)
The game was an emotional one for FEU because of the Mac Baracael incident and despite being distracted they pulled through to get a slim 71-69 win over UE as Benedict Fernandez and Mark Barroca stepped up for the Tams.
It’s just too bad that even this game was a part of the never-ending saga of controversies that the UAAP dealt with in the first round. Marlon Adolfo shot a ball with no time left on the shot clock with the Red Warriors up by three points with three minutes to go, which forced UE to file a protest, to no avail.
Honorable Mention: Ateneo vs La Salle (July 6), FEU vs Ateneo (July 31), Adamson vs UE (July 20), NU vs FEU (August 3)
===================================================
The Best On-Court Controversy of the First Round: The ID rule
The first controversy of the season is the most dubious distinction of the first round. While the rule has good intentions on having coaches follow the rules on wearing identification cards, it’s unfair for DLSU, or any other team for that matter, to be slapped with a technical foul when that infraction hasn’t have any effect on the game at all.
Taken the quote from UAAP officials, “games are won on the court” and unfortunately having teams granted two technical free throws because of an ID isn’t a good way to promote the saying.
Honorable Mention: UE protest with 100,000-peso cash bond to pay, referees' getting suspended
====================================================
'I Hope We Won't See This Ever Again in the UAAP' Citation: Mac Baracael shooting
Seriously speaking, read between the lines hopefully none of these players with dreams and potentials of playing basketball would be ever involved in this situation again.
=====================================================
Best Uniform: FEU Tamaraws
They have reverted back to a much more darker green colors to remind us the heydays of Arwind Santos and even going further to Ronald Magtulis, Rysal Castro, and Celino Cruz. Those colors truly fit the Tamaraws and the FEU letterings contribute well to the simplicity.
Honorable Mention: UE Red Warriors, UST Growling Tigers, NU Bulldogs (yes, the jerseys are growing on me)
=====================================================
Worst Uniform: De La Salle Green Archers
Their green colors have come from dark green (Renren Ritualo era), to La Salle green, to a light green which would remind you of a color of a guava that you can buy in the market. Maybe the shift to Adidas was not a good move.
Honorable Mention: Ateneo having black colors in their blue and white decals
====================================================
Best Crowd: UE fans
In fairness to traditional-like cheers of Ateneo and La Salle, and to the other fans going to the venue, UE is like the JRU of the UAAP, they always root to their lungs and has a bit of unique cheers to go with it.
Honorable Mention: Ateneo, La Salle, UST, and FEU fans
====================================================
Least Crowd: NU fans
Hopefully, NU fans can come up with a group of fans called ‘The Dog Pound’ and they will shout “HU LET DA DOGS AWT?!” during games to reflect on their monicker. Despite the low turnout, their fiesta-like band adds flavor to a drum-dominated UAAP tournament.
Honorable Mention: UP fans
====================================================
Best Annoying Scalpers: ULTRA scalpers
They will quickly come to your attention, especially if you just came down from your own car or a taxi or tricycle. The usual question would be "Sir (or Mam) Ticket! Sang side niyo gusto?" and if they saw you with a UAAP ID, the annoyance resumes with them remarking "Baka may extra ticket ka dyan?"
====================================================
Sound of the First Round: "Burger! Burger!"
A new feature by ABS-CBN Sports and sponsored by McDonalds. They would always feature a former player in attendance and then some voices would come out and say "Burger! Burger!” ika nga sa tagalog “Pacheeseburger ka naman!”
Honorable Mention: Rolly Manlapaz and his distinctive role as a coliseum barker (he can be annoying at times though mostly going overboard with his “THIELEEHHH!!”) -> [so true!! hahaha.. :))]
====================================================
'Cheap promotional plug' Award: Head and Shoulders Crucial Stop Replay
As evidence by the additional corporate sponsors in slow-mo replays this year, ABS put up this Head and Shoulders Crucial Stop replay. The problem though is that most of those 'crucial stops' are long heave passes that are easy turnovers and also the likes of Dylan Ababou losing the ball in the air while attempting a shot, what the hell?
====================================================
‘We miss Sev Sarmienta’ Award: No Sev Sarmienta in UAAP broadcasts
Sev Sarmienta isn’t covering the games on television for ABS-CBN; rumors had it that he became frustrated of one incident. His loss has gravely affected their TV coverage with their current commentators struggling to pick up the slack.

in fairness, totoo lahat ah. hahaha.. :))
nasan ang UP?

UE Red Warriors – It seems that every UE game their fans come into droves and will easily pack the arena. They might not be as traditional as Ateneo or La Salle or even a tough San Beda and Letran audience in the NCAA, but these fans root their lungs out for their Red Warriors as they have a different kind of rowdiness during games. It also helps that 90 percent are women and most of their basketball players are marketable enough to appear in magazines.
Ateneo Blue Eagles – Every time there is a Blue Eagle match, it seems that the place looks pack and every seat available is taken. Aside from their traditional cheers, they can be as tough to the opposing team (and even the referees) as possible. Aside from that, they are very supportive to their team.
UST Growling Tigers – At times the number of UST fans is not consistent but when the “GO USTE!” chants are heard, it seems like they could outnumber any opposing audience as possible. The ploy of bring hotdog-shaped balloons for fans to use is also a great marketing idea.
De La Salle Green Archers – It was a disappointment that for a big game like DLSU and UE last Saturday that the green side wasn’t even full. I have to agree that Archer fans can be as passive as possible but there are also a lot of hardcore fans to boot. As unfortunate as it seems, it helps that their fanbase can go to as near as Benilde to as far as La Salle Dasma or La Salle Lipa.
FEU Tamaraws – If the San Beda crowd is called as a “SEA OF RED” then the Tamaraws faithful can be dubbed as a “SEA OF YELLOW”. Most of their fans arrive at the arenas wearing their PE t-shirts which helps and their “GO FIGHT TAMARAWS! LETS GO!” chant is growing on everyone’s ear. Like UE, most of their fans are women and has a youth-like approach to cheering their players.
Adamson Falcons – The crowd support is average if not decent. While some of them can be rowdy, most of the time they don’t show their eagerness to root for their squad despite the “FALCONS LETS GO!” chants.
UP Fighting Maroons – After an opening day win, State U fans have since declined and most don’t even bother to go to the games as usual. Maybe they have already gave up hopes on their teams chances despite the fact the UP is really in for a rebuilding year.
NU Bulldogs – It’s unfortunate that the Bulldogs have not shown any significant chance in crowd support over the last few years. Most they came into the venue with a group of high schools student although their fiesta-like band brings a different flavor to a drum-oriented UAAP. Hopefully, their fan base could grow and we could hear a group called the DOG POUND with them barking and shouting “HU LET THE DAWGS AWT?!”

WAG KAYONG SUSUKO.
bye, UAAP?

"The Homestretch!"
by Tony L. Atayde
With 3 weeks left in the UAAP season, the race for the last 2 slots of the Final Four is still uncertain. FEU, UE and UST will definitely bring up their game and will try to make a strong run.
Among the 3, UE seems to be the strongest on paper. However, they have shown a very inconsistent type of play. In the first round, they beat La Salle yet lost to Adamson. They started the 2nd round with a loss to La Salle and had a scare with NU.
Where is the UE team that was so consistent last year? One player who has lost his luster has been Paul Lee. He is not playing the type of game that many expected from him. Maybe he has not recovered from the bout with dengue that sidelined him for a few games. James Martinez has also been erratic. He will have one big game and get lost in the next.
UE has so many players they can throw at you. Their big men, Espiritu, Thiele and Lllagas, can be very good on both sides of the court. Their rebounding is awesome. They have very good guards in Lingganay, Arellano, Reyes and Martinez.
What UE seems to lack is chemistry and confidence. Last year, they knew they would win even before they set foot on the court. This year, they are unsure of themselves. That loss to Adamson really shattered their confidence. Whereas last year they would blow their opponents away, this year they have to work extra hard just to stay in the game.
So what does UE need? They need to beat a good team very convincingly. If they beat Ateneo or FEU in a very convincing manner, then that confidence might just return. Honestly, I believe that UE cannot be counted out. If they peak at the right time and get into the Final Four, they can beat any team they face.
FEU on the other hand is lucky that they had a good first round.
Winning 5 games, they now need at least 3 victories to get into the Final Four. But with a 13 man roster, that might not be as easy as it seems. In their last game, the key players looked tired. After the Baracael incident, their adrenaline took them to 2 victories in the first round. However, they could not keep this up? They lost to NU and Ateneo after their inspired wins. They have to face Adamson, UST and DLSU in their next 3 games. They need to win at least 2 of those 3 to stay in the race.
Glen Capacio is probably the most underrated coach in the league yet he has been able to overcome all the obstacles thrown at the Tamaraws and put them where they are. Imagine what a team this would have been with an intact line-up.
UST is the underachieving team this year. Even with Jervy Cruz leading the MVP race, they just can’t seem to put together a string of victories. Mirza is not as effective as he was last year. Ababou is very inconsistent. Chester Taylor has shown nothing so far.
They live and die with the 3 point shot and they have not really been hitting them. Even Jervy Cruz has not really been as big a factor as he should be. Japs Cuan is sorely missed by the Growling Tigers.
Let’s not also forget that both NU and Adamson are no pushovers this year. UE, UST and FEU cannot afford to take these teams lightly. I can see that NU and Adamson will definitely throw a monkey wrench into the standings.
Now what about this sudden surge of injuries that has plagued the league? Atkins, Batricevic, Cuan, Garcia and Jahnke to name a few, has thrown many teams out of whack. I really don’t think that the teams are playing dirty. It has just been a string of bad luck that has brought about all these unfortunate accidents.
What I see a lot off are players who cramp up, especially at the Ultra. It must be the heat in the stadium that causes it. I also think that the court at the Ultra is not constructed well and this causes a lot of wear tear to the players.
The UAAP should demand from the management of Ultra that they improve that stadium. The scoreboards are awful. The shot clock is in terrible condition. Even the player’s bench is awful there. What a waste of a venue.
Well it’s the homestretch and all the teams are moving their games up a notch. Who will have a longer season and who will go on an early vacation?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
GO UE!!! Sana makasama kayo sa Final Four.

GO ATENEO!!! Ipagpatuloy niyo lang ang inyong magandang nasimulan.

at syempre, GO UP!!

(oh no... is this goodbye?

HINDI PA NOH!!

what?! dalawa na panalo ng UP?!
by jesse at 8/02/2008 11:50:00 PM
HIMALA!!!
hahaha.. oi wag kang ganyan. :))
ang galing kaya nila kanina. :|
omg, i can't believe i'm saying this. :))
pero seryoso, anlupet nila kanina. though syempre hindi rin naman perfect. basta at least, i can say na they really fought well. binigyan nila ng meaning ang "FIGHTING" sa UP FIGHTING MAROONS. (wow, gumaganon. hahaha.)
btw, against Adamson (AdU) nga pala yung game kanina. at in fairness, lumelevel-up din ang Adamson this season. biruin mo, NATALO NILA ANG UE?!? can't believe it!! haha. bitter. :))
so.. so.. so...
JOKE.
BASTA ANG SAYA SAYA MAG-CHEER KANINA! SUPER!
hindi talaga ako nagsisisi na nag-Cheerleading ako na PE. and i'm proud of it! woohoo!
INTENSE. (20 points!!)
2) Martin Reyes - syempre, the 3-point shooting master! hahaha. imbento eh noh. basta ang galing galing galing niya talaga, ever! baka nga between Tiu and Reyes, Reyes ako eh.
3) Woody Co - Woody Co, Woody Mo, Woody nating lahat.
4) Mark Lopez - OK. BAKIT MAY LOPEZ DITO?! hahaha.. oi wag ka, kahit palpak yan minsan mag-3 points, maaasahan mo naman yan sa rebound. pareho sila ni agbayani. syempre di yan pahuhuli. (naks, pinagtanggol talaga. hahaha.)
5) Migs de Asis - HA?!?!? hahahaha... may naligaw ata. :))
Good Job, guys!
grabeh kanina, nagkasundo kami ni fretche sa pag-cheer kay Lopez! hahaha. ewan ko kung bakit, pero nakiki-cheer din sya kay #7 eh. haha. so everytime na si lopez may hawak ng bola, or pag freethrow, cheer kami, GO LOPEZ! hahaha.
tas nung pinaupo muna siya para magpahinga, tapos nakakahabol yung kalaban, sigaw kami, IBALIK SI LOPEZ! hahaha. naku, bakit kaya?!? HINDI PWEDE 'TO. hahahaha... =))
favorite cheer ko, yung "SHOOT THAT BALL!" tsaka "[UP] DEFENSE!" syempre with the tone and the hand gestures. haha. kasi halos nakaka-ilang cheer kami niyan sa isang game eh. tas nakakatuwa pa, kasi pag yung Shoot that Ball, TUMATALBOG PA KO. hahaha. wala lang. :))
now let's talk about UP's second win.
First Win, against NU, Araneta Coliseum
Second Win, against Adamson, Araneta Coliseum
hmm... see the resemblance?
hahaha.. resemblance resemblance ka pa dyan eh. :))
tol, parehong sa Araneta nanalo ang UP. :))
tapos!
nung halftime, sa wakas ay una nag-perform ang UP Pep. kasi lagi na lang silang pangalawa eh. haha. lamang kasi UP kanina kaya sila ang nauna!
hmm... kaya lang, nakakalungkot. kasi yung performance nila kanina, parang hindi kasing exciting ng usual na routines nila. yung may binabato-bato, may pyramid, may oble pose (gets mo na yun. yung ganun. haha. basta.), etc. tapos ang dami pang nahulog kanina.
basta in short, parang hindi yun ang UP Pep Squad na kilala ko.
but anyway, sinabi ko na lang kay fretche nun, "that's a sign! mananalo daw tayo!" hahaha..
AND WE DID!!
YEY!!!
68-76
ang saya saya talaga... UP @ 2-5.
aminin mo, that's better than 0-7, right? :))
abangan na lang natin sa second round. UP will show more.
and i mean MORE!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
second game: UE vs. DLSU
UE won!! yeahboi.
62-68
it's called REVENGE.
hahaha!
if you still remember, last season 70, DLSU defeated UE twice in the finals. thus, they became the CHAMPIONS.
grr.
haha, bitter pa rin hanggang ngayon, ano ba yan!! :))
basta, i can't give much details about the game, kasi nga di ko naman napanood nang buo. last 15 seconds na lang naabutan ko eh. well in UAAP, yang 15 seconds na yan ay mahabang oras pa. AS IN.
idol ko yung sa laro ng ADMU at UST nung season 69 sa finals eh. last 1 second, unexpected turn of events. Ateneo pa nanalo, by one point. IMAGINE!
oh well. congrats, UP!
FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT!!
Two men drowns in UP managed facility
by jesse at 8/01/2008 08:19:00 PM
Two residents drowned Thursday morning (July 24) after leaping through murky waters stagnated at a water system of an abandoned government facility in U.P Diliman.
The victims were Nilo Toledana, 35, a native of Camarines Norte and Darwin Obinia, a native of Cagayan province. The two entered annex building of the National Hydraulics Research Center (NHRC) to dive into its mothballed water circulation system. Local police say that the lure of money from selling copper pipes and other metal equipments submerged underneath motivated the two into plunging through the waters.
Carina Alpay, Toledana's mother-in-law, said that residents in the area of Brgy. Culiat and Brgy. UP Campus consider the NHRC facility a “goldmine” because of the assorted steel equipments beneath the waters. She says that male dwellers sell whatever worthy items they recover from the site to nearby junk shops.
She notes that the “divers” plunge into the waters without any protections like eye goggles or oxygen devices. “Kabisado naman daw ng ibang sumisisid dyan yung lugar. Susuong sila ng nakapikit kasi malumot na't marumi yung tubig. Lalangoy sila papunta doon sa may bakal tapos lalagariin nila, (Some “divers“ claim that they have a mental map of the place because they have seen it before it became full of water. They dive the place with eyes closed because the water is really dirty. They'd swim directly to the place where the steel equipments are located then they'd use the steel to get a piece of it) “ she said.
Celso Bunag, a Barangay Peace & Security Officer of Brgy. Campus, said that the two men probably entered the facility through its back door because there are guards on duty at the NHRC's annex building entrance.
Members of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) under PO3 Bremmuel Magalong conducted the retrieval operations Thursday night. They recovered Obinia's body on the same day. PCG however had to suspend the search for Toledana's body that night because they ran out of oxygen supply. They recovered it Friday morning.
One witness said that Obinia actually tried to save Toledana's life. Mario Tuando, 39, Obinia's brother-in-law, said that it was Toledana who dived into the water facility first. He said that when Toledana failed to resurface, Obinia called the attention of the neighborhood. After doing so, he decided to plunge into the waters himself. Tuando said that Obinia even managed to resurface to tell the people that he can't find Toledana's body. He dived again and he never came back this time.
Bunag added that they saw injuries in Obinia's head when the latter's body was retrieved. The Ileja Funeral Services is yet to issue an autopsy report.
Maj. Bernie Baltazar, the officer-in-charge of U.P District Police, said that personnel from the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System would go to NHRC to siphon off the stagnant water in the facility's 1600 liters/second water circulation system. Official reports indicate that the water there is 5 foot deep although residents in the area claim that it is actually 12 foot deep.
Toledana's wife, Claire, did not notice anything unusual with her husband on that fateful day. “Umalis sya ng maaga. Pupunta lang daw sya sa mga kaibigan nya dun sa may Brgy. Culiat. Hintayin daw namin sya sa pananghalian, (He left our house early. He said that he'll just visit his friends there in Brgy. Culiat. He told us to wait him for lunch)” she said. She had just given birth to their 6th children last July 10.
Meanwhile, her eleven year old son Carlo had some ideas on what pushed his father into doing the fatal dive:“Gusto kasi ni Papa na may pang SM kami sa birthday ni Cielo sa Linggo, (My father probably wanted to have some money so that we can go to SM for Cielo's birthday on Sunday), he said.
For Elena Calanoga, Obinia's mother, the only unusual thing that his son did on that eventful day is that he treated his bosom buddies into a drinking spree. According to her, it is uncommon for her son to shell out so much money – even if it's his friend's birthday – since he has been jobless for the past months.
For both families, they not only lost their beloved father – they also lost their sole breadwinner. “I have six kids and I am jobless,” Mrs. Toledana lamented. Obinia also left behind an unemployed wife and four children.
The seven hectare NHRC annex compound is located at the UP Arboretum – a land area located opposite the UP Diliman campus. The Arboretum has the distinction of being the “only natural rain forest in Metro Manila”. The NHRC is a research and development center under the UP College of Engineering. Established in 1973, it was mandated to conduct research and provide technical inputs on various problems of water resource development, management and other related fields.
