For the First Time, nag-La Salle ako!!

Buzzer-beating putback lifts DLSU past Growling Tigers

by Josef Ramos

ROUND TWO of De La Salle versus Santo Tomas proved to be as pulsating as the first matchup –but produced the same victor.

Maui Villanueva’s buzzer-beating putback led the Green Archers, playing without coach Franz Pumaren, to an 81-79 escape win against the Growling Tigers in the 71st UAAP men’s basketball tournament last August 28, 2008 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Playmaker LA Revilla missed a lay-up in the dying seconds but the former University of the Philippines Integrated School standout was at the right place at the right time to push the defending champions to a 9-3 record and a tie for second-place with Far Eastern University.

“I thought we’re heading to overtime but the replay footage shows that I beat the clock,” said Villanueva. “This game means a lot for me because I pulled my team to victory.”

Seldom-used rookie guard Emilian Vargas, a transferee from Emilio Aguinaldo College, capped off a 5-0 UST run by scoring off a drive with 5.5 ticks left on the clock.

UST coach Pido Jarencio then called his last timeout, which gave deputy DLSU coach Jack Santiago of enough time to regroup for the winning play.

“I’m having sleepless nights because of thinking about this game,” said Santiago, who temporarily took over Pumaren’s job. “I just followed the system of coach Franz and that was okay.”

Santiago, who will still pilot De La Salle in the last two games of the elimination round, handled the coaching chores as Pumaren is presently in Tehran, Iran for the Philippine Youth squad’s campaign in the FIBA Asia Under-18 Basketball Championships for Junior Men.

Veteran JV Casio led La Salle with 29 points, while Peejay Barua poured in 17 markers and Rico Maierhofer tallied 16 and grabbed 16 rebounds for the Green Archers to offset the huge 28-point and 20-rebound performance of reigning MVP Jervy Cruz.

“I salute our young guns for playing great today,” said Casio. “They will replace us when we leave this school. It is really great to see their determination and desire to win.”

The loss relegates UST to 5-7 and two games behind University of the East for the last Final Four spot. The EspaƱa outfit has to win its remaining two games – including a showdown with UE – and hope the Warriors lose their remaining assignments to forge a playoff with them for the last semifinal slot.

The scores:

De La Salle 81 – Casio 29, Barua 17, Maierhofer 16, Villanueva 6, Mangahas 6, Revilla 4, Webb 2, Ferdinand 1, Atkins 0, Malabes 0, Walsham 0.

UST 79 – Cruz 28, Ababou 15, Mirza 11, Vargas 9, Bautista 5, Camus 3, Canlas 3, Cuan 3, Allera 2, Fenequito 0, Fortuna 0, Gile 0, Taylor 0.

Quarter scores: 15-13; 34-36; 54-47; 81-79

walang koneksyon yung movie nila KC at Richard dito. :|

pero seryoso, sa unang pagkakataon ever since na-involve ako sa UAAP, pumanig ako sa La Salle.

HIMALA.

haha. eh kasi, pag nanalo ang UST dito, delikado UE. at HINDI PWEDE YUN.

kaya kahit mainit dugo ko sa DLSU, no choice.

at hindi nga nila ako binigo! nanalo sila!

For the First Time din, ngayon ko lang na-appreciate si Casio!! seryoso. kasi dati, tuwing may game sila, lagi ko siyang binabara eh. kasi, aminado akong magaling siya. at siya ang laging sagabal sa mga teams na gusto ko. TINIK!

PANALO SILA!!

pero, pero, pero.

yung nagsilbing coach nila ngayon, nawindang ako. haha.
