Similar patterns woven into career of Tiu, Casio

They were top gunners and clutch players of two teams with long history of rivalry and the varsity careers of Ateneo's Chris Tiu and La Salle's JV Casio were somehow linked to the seething feud that ended another chapter Thursday.

Tiu and Casio first crossed paths in the UAAP in 2003 and parted ways in the just-concluded collegiate season ruled by Ateneo.

Casio, 22, has the slight edge in their statistical battle as he averaged 11.4 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.4 steals in five seasons.

His best effort came this year where he normed 17 points, 4.07 boards, 3.64 assists and 1.43 steals.

Tiu, 23, also compiled solid numbers - 9.5 points, 3.7 caroms and 2.1 assists - also in five seasons.

Like Casio, Tiu shone in his last season, firing personal highs 14.43 points, 6.07 rebounds and 3.64 assists. But it was the sweet-shooting Ateneo guard who came out triumphant when he helped power the Eagles to their first title in six years.

Interestingly, the two missed a season apiece with Tiu skipping the 2005 season to study in France and Casio out in 2006 because of La Salle's suspension.

The duo never missed the post season in their years with their respective teams with Casio finishing with a championship once, a runner-up thrice and a Final Four stint once. Tiu, on the other hand, also had one championship and one Final Four finish but had only two second place trophies.

But after wrapping up their collegiate careers, Tiu and Casio would soon start another chapter to their personal duel - in the Philippine Basketball League where they are expected to meet again.

Trash-talking at the 2008 UAAP Cheerdance Competition

i know it's kinda late already. pero it's a nice read kasi eh. well at least for me. :))

-----

The 15th Parallel put 8 cheering squad members in one aquarium -- 1 cheering squad member per UAAP member-school. Yes, we are putting these 8 people in the cage of wild prostitutes in red light districts. But no, stop thinking whatever perverted or distraught you are contemplating about. We have decided to put out an experiment with how the 8 cheering squad members will relate with each other while they are in the aquarium.

We have decided to split the entry of the cheerleaders to avoid in 4 slots a major catastrophe (read: gulpihan). The entry order is UP and UST first, then DLSU and ADMU, then FEU and UE, with ADU and NU to end.

Nash Castro miced-up the cheering squad members a-la ESPN Wired and TNT Inside Trax and this is what they had to say...

(most conversation in Filipino)

UP: Woot! We're the champions. Panis kayo. UUUU! Whoooo, we're ready to defend the CDC crown.

UST: Tse! Nakatsamba lang kayo. Hindi nyo pa din mapapantayan ang Salinggawi. Gayahin nyo muna yung 5-peat namin. Kukunin na namin ang hiniram nyo lang last year!

UP: Ha ha, kasalanan ba naming natumba yung isang cheerleader nyo? Gamitan nyo kasi ng diskarte. Kaunting utak! Palibhasa mukha lang kayong board exam.

UST: Mga public schooler! Tama ba naman yung pagtawanan at pagsigawan yung nalaglag naming kasama? Wala talaga kayong asal!

UP: Ayusin nyo kasi ang pagbubuhat, puro kasi kayo smile.

*UST cheerleader slips up a picture from her wig*

UP: Haha LOL at least hindi kami nang-didirty finger. Pakunyari pa kayong royal and pontifical. *UP cheerleader also slips up a picture from her short shorts*

Mapang-kutya. Akala nyo kayo lagi ang matatalino. Magaling kami sa board exams!

UP: Keyword. Quality over quantity pa din kami.

UP: Mas okay naman yung 100 percent sa 50 percent. Again, quality over quantity. Kaya nga 100 > 400, diba?

UST: Ewwwwww jologs. Ganyan ba ang math sa public school? No wonder wala talagang patutunguhan ang bansa natin. Pulpol ang mga public schooler.

DLSU: *comes in* Wag ka namang masyadong bitter dahil di kayo kasama sa Big 3. And if I may add, 150 > 400 and 100 > 400 ulit.

ADMU: *comes in* Amen.

UST: Ano yan, Shell, Caltex at Petron? Doon naman talaga ako nagpapa-gasolina and I must say, talagang big 3 sila. Mahal ang presyo nila.

DLSU: Inutil! Tatlo! Three! Hindi kayo kasali!!!

UST: Hoy mga DLSU A.K.A Dyslexic University, magsitahimik kayo. Di nyo ba alam na pinagtatawanan kayo ng AMA at ginagawang marketing ad nila yung wrong spelling nyo?

ADMU: Ginagawa din naming pang-cheer pag halftime. Wrong spelling! Wrong spelling! Wrong spelling! Hahahahaha!!! AL SALLE!!! *opens up his laptop for the pic*

UST: *chuckles*

DLSU: Magkasing bastos lang kayo eh. Mga walang modo talaga kayo. Ang yayabang nyo pa. Hindi ganyan ang tinuturo sa school namin.

ADMU: Eh ano? Wrong spelling? Hahahaha!!! O di kaya kabobohan. Ang yabang pa nung banner nyo last year ah. Langhiya, 392-488-nuff said pala ah. Sinong nasa top 500 ngayon?

DLSU: LOL ano naman? Binago nila sobra yung criteria dun kaya bumaba kami. Pati naman din UP na-drag ng 100 places down ah. Nakakatuwa ba yun?

UP: Gagong toh, dinamay pa kami.

ADMU: Ibig sabihin dinoktor nyo yung ranking last year. Hahahahaha shit's on you men! Wag kasi kaagad magyayabang. Nandodoktor ka nalang ang yabang mo pa.

DLSU: Look who's talking.

Wala kayong solar car men. Puro talak lang.

FEU: *enters* Excuse me mga elitista, third place ata kami sa cheerdance competition. Baka gusto nyong tumabi at mas magaling kami dito.

DLSU: Wag nyo sabihing pati dito dinirektahan kayo ni Anton Montinola na maging win at all cost? Hahahaha kawawa naman. Tigang sa panalo.

FEU: Sino kayang nasuspended sa win at all cost attitude? Hahahaha.

ADMU: Ang arogante nito ah.

At lalong lalo na, hindi kami nagchochoke when it matters. Hahahaha 2 > 14. Parang 100 > 400 lang yan.

UP, UST, ADMU, FEU: *all laugh hard* Go UE! Go go UE! Ay, este, La Salle pala! Hahahaha!!! Iiyak na yan! Choke choke choke choke choke choke!!!

UE: Tinalo pa din namin kayo lahat last year!

ADU: *enters* Choker talaga yan, tinalo nga namin sila nung first round eh.

UP: Pero league doormat pa din kayo errrr -- tulad namin. Pero lampaso pa din kayo nung first at second round. Belat kayo. Belat. Bleh!

UP: Nagsalita ang magaling.

Wala man lang maipanalo hahahahaha. Sobrang bonehead sa basketball.

DLSU: ...

UST: Wag ka na magsalita, cheerleader from Dyslexic University.

NU: *enters* Akala ko ba cheerdancing competition to?

ADMU: Pero trash-talking to, you NU lowlife.

NU: Low-life pala ah. Sinong lowlife kaya yung nagpatalo sa amin sa last game of the season nila nung season 70.

Thank you NU nga pala!!!

ADMU: Nagsama talaga tong dalawang low-class na to. Bagay kayo, hindi nyo ka-lebel ang The Arrneo noh. World-class kami.

DLSU: Pero in fairness gumagaling sila sa Cheerdance competition.

UP: Teka, co-big 3 members. Wag tayong mag-away masyado. Let's get back on topic.

UST: Nakakaasar kayo ah. Wala ba man lang Big 4 dyan?

NU: Di lang kasi kayo kasali.

UE: Hahahahahahaha. Siguro sa cheering big 3 kayo. Hanggang dun lang. Di nga kayo makapasok sa final four kahit sa basketball this season

UST: Nagchampion naman kami noong 2006. Guess sino nag-choke nung 2006. Twice. Hindi sya Ateneo. Hindi sya Adamson. Kayo ata yun! At wala kayong title in 20 years yuck. What more pa kaya CDC?

UP: Ah basta, shumatap na lang kayo USTe. Kami magchchampion ngayong 2008. Go for back to back. Matatapang, matatalino! UUU!!!

Put your money where your mouth is!

ADMU: Sana makapasok kami sa top 3 this year.

DLSU: Sana wala kayong win at all cost attitude. Hello, Anton Montinola!

FEU: Kayo lang yun. Sino bang ipapadala nyo sa pep squad nyo? Si Benitez at si Gatchalian?

UE: Sana manalo kami. Or maka-place ng maganda.

Wag nyong gawan ng bisaya version ang Get that Ball. What the fuck? GIT DAT BOWL!?!

DLSU: Onga. Wag nyo na rin i-rip off ang Go, Go La Salle. Amin yon eh. Dedemanda namin kayo dahil vina-violate nyo ang Intellectual Property Rights.

UE: May fine line naman eh. Bo-Bo La Salle yung sa inyo, Go Go yung amin. Hahahahaha.

DLSU: Ulol, choker.

ADMU: Wow, English yun ah.

Mukhang alanganin yung contingent namin, wala pang routine. Wala kasing praktisan eh.

ADMU: Hahahahahahahaha, loser.

DLSU: ...

JV Casio's final stand as a Green Archer

It’s not everyday that La Salle sees a player as gracious on and off the court as Jvee Casio. The Green Archers have been known to the outside world for bringing in bad-boy bruisers in their lineup, who are typically viewed as ones who try to taunt, trash-talk and outsmart their counterparts in ways that their opposition would not like. The most recent examples of these bruisers and trash-talkers would be Joseph Yeo, Mark Cardona and Ryan AraƱa. We may love them Archer Fans but these Archers are vilified by many rivals, especially the one engorged in blue and white. Truth of the matter is, they hardly like any UAAP player who puts on a green and white jersey with the words La Salle in trademark Old English text.

And then came Joseph Evans Casio from San Beda High School who, back in 2003, was tasked to anchor a team that was rookie-laden and still suffering from the pains of not achieving the coveted five-peat championship that they lost to the rival in blue and white. I remember seeing him first in a game in 2003 and when I look back from his rookie days days in 2003, he has really come a long, long way.

He’s been also through a lot of wars and epic battles. He won the Rookie of the Year award despite being under the shadow of much-touted rookies such as his guard archnemesis Chris Tiu. He was one of the keys in the miracle run of the Archers back in 2004 and he hit one of the shots, a three pointer, that defined his UAAP career as a clutch performer in the UAAP Finals against the FEU Tamaraws in that same year. That shot of his even strengthened my fanaticism and adoration of the talent and the composure that Jvee Casio has.

He was also integral in the run of the Archers in 2005 where they finished second to the FEU Tamaraws in a rematch of the 2004 UAAP Finals. He was an integral part of that runs but he was under the shadows of star players like Yeo and Cardona. It was his time to shine in 2006 but a large roadblock of a controversy delayed Jvee’s enshrinement to superstardom by 1 year. La Salle was suspended after the management discovered that it had been allowing 2 illegit high school graduates to play for La Salle.

It was hard to see La Salle down together with Jvee but it was worth the wait. He kept plugging in the minor leagues but he was awesome and spectacular. I remembered that the Archers were playing in minor summer leagues while the rest of the UAAP was on going. Time flew fast and fast forward to July 2007, the Archers were reinstated in the UAAP and it was time for Jvee Casio to assume the role of being one of the team’s stars.

Together with co-stars TY Tang and Cholo Villanueva which was the three-headed guard combination of La Salle all-season long, Jvee Casio kept his class act backed-up with his no nonsense game and he became the number one headache of coaches in the La Salle lineup. His high freethrow clip kept opponents from fouling him and he really developed his inside-outside game.

During his early years, he was only known to be a spot-up shooter but through the years, he has developed his slashing moves to keep his opponents figuring out what his next move will be. He confused opponents with his repertoire of moves. If his opponents gave him enough distance, My most favorite moves from him are his step-back three pointers and his dribble penetrations that faze the opposition.

Jvee lived up to the superstar billing that was tagged to him. The sweetest part of it is that they sealed the deal and came back from the suspension to win the 2007 UAAP Championship. They shocked the world and defeated the invincible UE Red Warriors in two games in the Finals. He won the Finals MVP together with Cholo Villanueva. Questions came in whether he will return and play out his final year of eligibility, but he silenced doubts when he agreed to play in his final year of eligibility.

2008, his final year with the Green and White and he still never ceases to amaze Lasallians on and off the court. He led the Green Archers to a finals appearance this season. They were against an uphill climb against the Ateneo Blue Eagles as they were completely outclassed due to Ateneo’s more superior lineup and the because of the referees who were at it again as was the case in Day 1. Though they lost to the arch-rival Blue Eagles via a sweep, he still never ceases to amaze me. Even in moments of defeat. Never ever.

While we were chanting his name as a sign of appreciation for all of his best efforts (because no one made a thank you banner for him because we all thought that there will be a game three), he asked us to stop for a while and reserve the cheers for later because we were cheering when Ateneo was about to sing their victory hymn (congratulations to them). I just smiled quietly. What a class act on and off the court.

La Salle has been truly blessed with a player like Jvee Casio with the gift of basketball and with the gift of character. We will surely miss his amazing drives to the basket, his dribble and dazzle moves that confuse the opposition, his three pointers that break the heart of a rowdy opponent. We will miss the gentle and the super classy but deadly character that he brought to La Salle.

Aside from being a primary nightmare of the opponents in the court, he also brings his classy and wonderful act into the classroom, managing his Green Archer life and the regular La Salle student life well. He is one of the exemplary student-athletes that you can find in the UAAP.

I am forever grateful to Jvee Casio. He has brought La Salle basketball and DLSU in general to greater heights. He became the team ambassador, the marketing face of the team, and more importantly, he became the heart and soul of current crop of the Green Archers. He deserves his jersey to be retired and to be enshrined forever in greatness for what he’s done to La Salle. It’s the best that we can do for all of his contributions for DLSU. I wish him the best of luck in his professional career.

Thank you Jvee for 6 years of Green and White. Thank you for 6 years worth of memories. It was worth the ride with you! You are one of the best players that carried the Green and White. MARAMING MARAMING THANK YOU SAYO CAPTAIN JVEE!

ANIMO JVEE CASIO!!! MABUHAY KA!!!

aww... JV. you make me sad. :((

know what, mas nalulungkot pa ko ngayon sa pag-alis ni JV sa UAAP kesa kay Chris Tiu. :|

"While we were chanting his name as a sign of appreciation for all of his best efforts, he asked us to stop for a while and reserve the cheers for later because we were cheering when Ateneo was about to sing their victory hymn."

--- iba ka, JV. IBA KA.

...sige, i like you na rin!! (but next to Chris Tiu lang. sorry. haha.)

too bad ngayon lang kita na-appreciate. kung kelan tapos na ang season, at kung kelan last year mo na. pero di bale, natapos man ang UAAP, magsisimula pa lang ang paglalakbay mo sa PBA. dun na lang kita susubaybayan, ha?

havana + haWaianas = HAVAIANAS

'Tara na sa DIVI!!'

yeah. we went to Divisoria yesterday para bumili ng kung anu-ano. and, well, everytime we go to Divisoria, I get really really excited. dunno why.

siguro kasi......

alam kong marami na naman akong mabibili with just a few hundreds in my pocket! haha.

btw, para dun sa mga hindi nakakaalam, allergic ako sa original stuffs. hahaha. i usually go for the cheaper ones. well, siguro kasi i was raised as a "kuripot" girl. haha. or siguro para mas magandang pakinggan, pinalaki ako bilang isang "matipid" na bata. haha.

SARAP. :))

next yung pang-sounevir. dito kami nagtagal. hirap mamili eh. :(

I'll help you na lang."

hahaha. potek yan. :))

"With Samsung, it's not that hard to imagine." =))

then yun, while we were traversing (naks. terminologies.) the bangketa, one table caught my eye. well, not the table itself but the item being sold. haha.

may mga nakasabit na tsinelas (yes, tsinelas.) at may iba pang naka-scatter sa table. and when i moved closer, i saw clearly the "HAVAIANAS" written on the slippers. and i was like, "WOAH. MAY HAVAIANAS NA?!"

haha. i know matagal nang may havaianas. ORIGINAL HAVAIANAS. but this was the first time i saw an imitation of the orig havs na as in gayang-gaya talaga yung nakasulat. seryoso.

kasi before, ang alam kong unang lumabas na imitation ng havs was yung "HAVANA" pa yung nakasulat tas may Brazil flag pa ata dun sa strap. haha. and i said that time, "uh-oh. eto na ang simula ng imitation era ng Havaianas."

at hindi ako nagkamali. the next time i saw another imitation was when we were in a supermarket, and we happened to pass by the shoes/slippers section. nakita ko ang isa na namang pamilyar na bagay sa aking mga mata.

HAHA. eh ano ba naman, just the act of trying to copy one's property is already piracy. well, para sakin ganun. :)

and i thought, "naku, hanggang dito na lang ba kaya nilang gawin?"

I WANT MORE!! hahahaha. :))

funny talaga. nakakatuwa na nakakatawa. EWAN. :))

haaai.. ang sarap talaga sa Divisoria. it's actually one of my favorite places here in Manila. SERYOSO. madami kang makikita. di lang paninda, kundi pati mga tao. and pag pumupunta kami dun, i feel like i'm going back to history. yung mga buildings at kalsada, luma. mga bridges, nakakatakot dahil baka bigla na lang gumuho. et cetera.

HAHAHA. :))

Ateneo: Where Amazing Happens

Even if I'm not from Ateneo, I do believe in this. :D

I love Ateneo. But only next to my UP, of course. haha.

One doesn't always have to be an Atenean to be blue-blooded. :)

Chris Tiu: "A Win FROM Him, and FOR Him"

from Chris Tiu's blog.

---------------

I still cannot describe what I am feeling right now. The closest word to describe it is probably "surreal". Before the game on thursday, I kinda had a strong hunch that we would come out victorious but at the same time i had a very heavy feeling. But i wasn't sure exactly what it was - stress, pressure, suppressed excitement? I really didn't know. One thing I knew was that this 2008 Blue Eagle team is destined for something so special. The character of the team is so amazing - hardworking, selfless, focused, fierce!

During that last game, I was so excited already but i had to hold back 'til the final buzzer. In one way, i wanted to hit a game-winning shot to seal my college career with a memorable play. But it didn't happen that way, instead, we created a huge lead that just symbolized the dominance of this team throughout the season. There was no "Jec Chia-like" play that turned the tables for the team, but rather it was a very consistent journey for us except maybe for that loss against FEU in the first round.

After that unbelievable monster performance by Rabeh in Game 1, Coach Norman already predicted what was gonna happen in Game 2. They would try to shut down Rabeh by all sorts of double teaming (maybe even taunting) just to get him out of his game, although it was his foul trouble that made him sit almost the entire first half. Coach therefore told me that it's my turn to be aggressive and just fire away!

Rabeh then made me realize that this is game #17 for us this season, that's why he knows that it's my time. I knew this # would always be special for me :) Rabeh just displayed that he is truly MVP by coming off the bench in the 2nd half very focused and prepared, not overly excited to score - a sign of maturity. Jobe Nkemakolam also stepped up big time in the 1st half filling in for Rabeh's absence.

Of course, Defensive Player of the Year Nonoy Blocklao proved once again that he is dependable as the last line of defense - truly deserving of the Finals MVP award and sending a very important message to the basketball community that scoring alone does not win championships but rather defense. What a role player! I want to acknowledge all my other teammates as well but I'll save that for my future entries.

When Jai made that running jumper with 1 minute something left in the game, I knew we had it! All of a sudden the gallery in blue, as if choreographed, held up signs that said 'Champions' which filled the entire lower portion of Araneta. And I got goosebumps! I've never felt such happiness that it forced me to tears as the game was still on-going.

Then, Nonoy and Rabeh hugged me in the center court while Jai was icing the game in the free throw line. Ryan Buenafe passed me the ball as the final seconds ticked and I just threw the ball as high as i could as the buzzer sounded! I wasn't thinking anymore. I hugged everyone that came my way! I just loved everybody! If I remember correctly, the first person i saw and hugged was Coach Jamike. I almost squashed his glasses upon my shoulders but I didn't care anymore! then I looked for my buddy Eric Salamat who came from the bench because of his cramps. But all the physical pain just went away at that instant. As I promised to Rabeh, I will look for him as the buzzer sounded and jump on him. But he was just too surrounded.

Then I hugged Coach Norman, to whom we offered this victory greatly. For the first time, he said "I love you Chris" and I responded "I love you too Coach!" Very uncharacteristic for both of us who always appear very serious and with no reaction.

It was a "mission accomplished" after 6 years of hard work and pain combined. More than the sense of fulfillment, i felt like the weight which i had to carry with me was relieved once and for all. From now on, i'll be merely a spectator. How I will miss wearing that blue and white jersey with the name "Ateneo" on it. It was a fairy-tale ending for me and I thank everyone but most especially I thank the Lord for this wonderful gift! I know that He has bigger plans for us and that there is a deeper purpose for all of this. Thank you Lord for making this dream come true! This win is for You, for Your greater glory!

AMDG

P.S. See you all at the Bonfire (as I mentioned before) on TIU's day, September 30, the last day of the RABEHdan @ 6pm at the Church of the Gesu (Haha corny!) Be prepared for the possibility of rainfall. :) It's time to party!

aww. i'm so happy for Chris. ilang beses ko na bang nasabi na they really deserve this win. this championship.

and natuwa ko dun sa sinabi niya (ni Rabeh daw) na that's their game # 17 for this season. oo nga noh. ngayon ko lang din na-realize. the number '17' is really meant for Chris.

"Then I hugged Coach Norman, to whom we offered this victory greatly. For the first time, he said "I love you Chris" and I responded "I love you too Coach!" Very uncharacteristic for both of us who always appear very serious and with no reaction."

kasi pag ngumiti pa siya, HIHIMATAYIN NA KO. hahaha. :))

"From now on, i'll be merely a spectator. How I will miss wearing that blue and white jersey with the name "Ateneo" on it."
--- Don't worry, Chris. I'll miss you too. HAHAHA. :))

but no, seriously, I'll surely miss MY Chris Tiu. He's been a part of my two-season-long addiction to the UAAP. madrama man at corny man pakinggan, pero, my UAAP life won't be complete without him.

ah basta. masaya ako dahil sila ang Champions. walang kokontra. :)

----------------------------

by the way, i saw this pic on http://www.gmanews.tv/sports and it really made me cry. well, not cry na as in hagulgol pero naging teary eyed lang talaga ko. actually pumatak na nga eh. haha.

na-touch talaga ko nung nakita ko 'to. ewan ko, pero i can feel talaga yung saya nila. TEARS OF JOY, kumbaga.

and Chris Tiu, CRYING? like, this was the first time i saw him cry. seriously. sa more than one year na pagsubaybay ko sa kanya, wala pa talagang instance na nakita ko siyang umiyak. kahit nga ata nung natalo sila ng La Salle last season sa playoffs, di ko siya nakita nang ganyan. so, wala lang. i was really moved by this picture. babaw ko noh? sori naman ah.

I wanna go to the BONFIRE on TIU's day!!!

Ateneo version 2K8

ON THE EVENING of June 10, 2008, Adamson University ended Ateneo de Manila’s lethargic run in one of the two major preseason tournaments held over the summer, 80-77. Fifteen days later, Jose Rizal University dealt the Blue Eagles another defeat, this time at the Blue Eagle Gym in front of students, some alumni and even the Blue Babble Band.

Sure, these were warm-up games. And in between the losses to the Falcons and JRU, coach Norman Black’s wards did cop a separate preseason title. But for the avid basketball observer who knows all too well that a collegiate hoops season doesn’t begin and end with the UAAP, it was quite worrisome.

Questions hovered over Ateneo. Who’d fill the void left by Ford Arao? Just how good was Rabeh Al-Hussaini going to be? Would the Blue and White still run that already well-scouted half-court offense of theirs? How would the much-anticipated 2008 rookie class play? With a million queries that needed to be answered, it seemed like Ateneo was going to have, at best, one of those ordinary years: Nine-plus wins in the elimination round followed by a dramatic knockout defeat.

A few friends of mine tried to reassure me. Two coaches – an ex-Ateneo mentor and a current tactician for an NCAA squad – told me they’d seen Al-Hussaini, and how much he’d improved. Just how vast was yet another question.

On the second playdate of the season, the Blue Eagles outplayed De La Salle in somewhat convincing fashion. A statement game, definitely, but one that still ran the same numbers of years past: Two fastbreak points on a measly four attempts, a mere +5 rebounding edge against a much smaller team and a sub-par 38 percent shooting clip from the floor.

Then came the matchup with University of the East. Before the game, I saw Al-Hussaini approach one of his former professors, who incidentally is one of my closest friends on campus. She called me and relayed what Rabeh had said, “Ma’am, babawi tayo ngayon.” True enough, the ex-NCAA juniors standout delivered what at that time proved his best game of his career – an 18-point, 10-rebound outing against a squad that Ateneo had failed to defeat just a year ago.

Three games later, the player people described as temperamental and soft came up with one of the best games a big man ever played in the UAAP. Though his 33 points and 20 boards weren’t enough to steer the Eagles to victory against Far Eastern University, they were more than enough to attract the whole league’s attention.

Amidst all the attention being accorded Al-Hussaini was the emergence of a system of basketball that hadn’t been seen in the hallowed grounds of Katipunan Avenue. The Blue Eagles began to run and up the tempo of the game, culminating in a 25-fastbreak point highlight factory against Adamson. Two games after, they set a season-high for that figure with 31 against University of the Philippines.

In one of those postgame interviews, Black had said that he always wanted his troops to run, even before this season. That desire was never really translated on-court prior to this year. Ateneo was known by its opponents to be a deliberate, half-court team that wouldn’t bust out on the open floor. Perhaps, the more attack-minded approach this year was the outcome of a system that was slowly being perfected throughout the Black years.

Speaking of perfection, the once turnover-happy Blue Eagles had transformed themselves into a well-oiled machine on the half-court. This season, the squad cut down its average number of turnovers a game by almost four, from 18.3 to 14.7, number one in the league during the elimination round. Gone were the days when guys went one-on-one and issued sloppy passes; this was a new and improved team.

This year’s rookie class, meanwhile, lived up to the hype, and then some. Everyone knew Ryan Buenafe could play. The three-time NCAA juniors champion with San Sebastian, despite having five-plus turnover days a couple of times, schooled much more experienced guys off the dribble, and created the most magical of shots (ask UE in its second round matchup with Ateneo). However, his real worth came when it mattered most. Truly, winners rise to the occasion, and Buenafe’s 12-point, 11-rebound outing in Game 1 of the finals showed that he’s a man among boys. Nico Salva, a prized catch from San Beda, also had his share of moments.

Of course, the constants were there. Chris Tiu not only set venues alight, but blossomed into the leader he was projected to be even last season. Eric Salamat and Nonoy Baclao brought the mental toughness that Ateneo never really had after winning its last title prior to this year in 2002, while Jai Reyes bounced back from a lousy 2007.

The rest, they say, is history. If anything, Ateneo silenced its critics, but most of all answered all the questions heading into the season…and then some. Just like an operating system, the Hail Mary Squad had its glitches. But even the most efficient systems hit the ground, hang and stall, scratch and burn. Ateneo de Manila basketball, version 2K8, is the end-product of hard work, sacrifice and tireless dedication.

To the Blue Eagles and the entire Ateneo community, savor this championship. Thank you all for a year to remember.

TRUE.

The Ateneo Blue Eagles has indeed improved this season. And for that, I would like to congratulate them for a job well done.

And yes, THANK YOU for giving me such great fights to watch. I'm looking forward to seeing you play next year.

even without Chris Tiu (and Yuri). aww. haha.

Sweet the first, last time for Chris sake

It was a bitter-sweet moment for Chris Tiu.

The 23-year-old shooting star played his last game for Ateneo last night, scored 16 points, grabbed five rebounds and issued three assists in 30 minutes of action.

Then he went home with his first UAAP crown.

"I couldn't describe the feeling. I can't control my emotion because this is my first championship in the UAAP," said Tiu who came back hard at La Salle after being held to two points last Sunday.

"But this is sweet because it's my last year," he added.

"For me it was unfinished business. We lost in the 2003 finals, my rookie year, and also lost in the 2006 finals. Last year, we lost in the Final Four and since I had one more year left, I gave it my last shot," he said.

It was the shot that mattered.

"Actually, it's a dream come true. We always fell short in the past," said Tiu, adding that he's not sure yet of what he plans to do after this victory, whether he'd play in the PBL or join the PBA.

"I will try to enjoy the moment first," said Tiu who also dedicated the victory to his coach, Norman Black.

"He's an unbelievable coach. We dedicated this victory to him, he's the mastermind of this success. He pushes us hard," said Tiu, who was barely a year old when Black was winning his grand slam as a PBA coach.

"I'm really pleased that he came back for his fifth year. He really didn't have to come back because he actually had other options other than basketball," said Black.

"So, we tried to convince him to come back and we're glad he did. In college basketball, particularly at Ateneo, if you win a title you will be remembered forever. It's like with the other champion teams.

"And the guys who won those championships are looked upon as idols. So I'm happy for Chris. I'm happy he came back and I'm happy he won the championship," said Black.

HAKOT EH. :))

ibig sabihin MAGALING.

AT AT AT!! ANG GWAPO NI CHRIS TIU NUNG AWARDING. GRABEH. NUNG KINUHA NIYA YUNG AWARD NYA, KULANG NA LANG TALAGA HIMATAYIN AKO. DI AKO MAKAHINGA. SERYOSO.

at kelangang all caps talaga habang sinasabi ko yun. :))

well, all i can say about the game is... action-packed.

haha, really? di halata eh. :))

well, an Ateneo-La Salle game will always be intense. fans, wild. players, physical. referees, ewan. laging inaaway ng mga tao. hahaha.

nung game, ilang beses inuulit-ulit nila Boom at TJ (haha, close?!) na tight daw talaga yung officiating ng refs, even simple hand checks at taunting in any way ay bawal. and one even said na "we have to commend the refs for the blah blah.... chuva." wala akong pakialam sa mga referees. basta masarap panoorin ang Ateneo.

pero nasobrahan nga ata pagka-strict nila. kasi first quarter pa lang, 2 fouls na agad si rabeh. so na-bangko muna siya. norman black even threw his id on the floor. sa sobrang inis siguro. haha. at in fairness, puro whistles nga nun. putol-putol tuloy yung laro.

hmm.. well, mahaba yung game eh.

yung mga nanalo, "Diagonal Defense", "Pray Before You Shoot" (di ko sure kung tama), another one but i forgot the title, "The Last Waltz", and the First Prize, "Synchronized [something]". basta yun. nakakatuwa na nakakalungkot yung The Last Waltz. si Jay Agbayani tsaka Martin Reyes. last year na kasi ni Agbayani ngayon eh.

o anyway, let's just go to the highlights. MY highlights of the game.

talk of the town (not really. haha): Rico Maierhofer's 2nd technical foul which eventually led to his ejection from the game. According to the referee, he saw Maierhofer flash his middle finger to one of the Eagles. kay Al-Hussaini ata.

nung isang game din ng la salle, na-technical siya dahil bigla bigla na lang sumabit sa ring. walang anu-ano. as in BIGLA. haha. ewan. trip nya lang ata nun. :))

tapos si Casio naman. na-foul out. SAAAAAD. :(

parang si Agbayani. LAST GAME, FOUL OUT.

to quote Chris Tiu (from his blog):
"Basically, I felt that JV had to carry the weight of the world upon his shoulders and that he tried to take it upon himself today. Unfortunately, he got very little help from his teammates except for Rico. I say the 'weight of the world' because not only does he have to lift his team past the 16 players of Ateneo but also the rest of the de La Salle community."

"Actions speak louder than words, mga pare." (pero wag suntukan, ha? )

and besides, Ateneo also had their own share of bad calls.

sa La Salle, may ganun ba, aside from Casio?

naalala ko tuloy ang Adamson last season. One man team. si Cabahug lang ang score nang score. in the end, wala rin. :|

Ateneo deserves the crown, because all season they proved that they are indeed the team to beat. 4-0 in favor of the Blue Eagles.

What a nice way for Chris Tiu and Yuri Escueta to end their collegiate careers. A Championship!

Baclao was the Finals MVP. Congrats! Hope to see you next season!

to Jai, Yuri, Eric, and other players i failed to mention, Good Job, guys!

to the whole ATENEO BLUE EAGLES, CONGRATS FOR A JOB WELL DONE!! SALAMAT SA MAGANDANG SEASON NA IBINIGAY NIYO SA AMING MGA SUMUSUPORTA SA INYO.

and of course to Coach Norman, Congrats din!! i know you've been waiting for this for four years already, and finally, it came!! i believe you really deserve to get this Championship because you've made the difference to Ateneo. 'til next season, Coach! time to defend your hard-earned title.

UNFAIR. UNFAAAAAAIIIR..

but still, Ateneo won. haha! :))

oh well, papel... i'm so happy, coz my all-blue outfit paid off. hahaha. my shirt, my headband, my comb, my ponytail. and lahat ng nakikita kong color blue, feeling ko that's a sign that Ateneo will win. and they did!! but of course, thanks to the power of prayers.

Thank God, Ateneo won.

"I'd rather be Green than be BLUE."

-- sabi nung singer. haha. (but i say otherwise.)

The song "I'd Rather Be Green Than Be Blue" was composed by Juan Miguel Salvador and first performed live in 2000 at the (then) Ultra (now Philippine Sports Multi-Purpose Arena); and re-recorded in 2005. This MTV, based on the said existing music, was created by students from De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde. The animation was done using Adobe (After Effects, Premiere and Photoshop). The live sequences were shot in La Salle Green Hills. -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ctgUIqyaBk

at in fairness, na-LSS ako dito ah.

kahit di ako taga-La Salle, feel ko yung kanta nila. haha. sarap kantahin eh. :))

actually yung chorus lang yung trip kong sabayan. :)

I'd Rather Be Green Than Be Blue
(The La Sallista Song)

Kamusta na mga 'tol, kapwa kong LaSallista.
Year 2005, di ka pa rin nag-iba.

If I were to live my whole life again,
I'd still want to be a LaSallista pa rin!
Bayaran man ako, I will still say to you,
I'd rather be green than be blue!

Beauty queen, model, napapalingon,
LaSallista lang pala ang tanging hilig nila.

Kawawa naman ang mga iba diyan!
Nagdudunung-dunungan, di naman yumayaman!
Manager, chairman, presidente daw sila,
Ngunit LaSallista ang may-ari nang kumpanya!

If I were to live my whole life again,
I'd still want to be a LaSallista pa rin!
Bayaran man ako, I will still say to you,
I'd rather be green than be blue!

Wag mo 'kong subukan, that's what Erap said.

Oo nga no, binaril ano?
Eh bakit nga ba?
Atenista kasi...

Mestiso man o hindi, pandak man o kirat,
Pagdating sa entertainment, LaSallista'y angat.
Megastar, boldstar, star for all seasons,

If I were to live my whole life again,
I'd still want to be a LaSallista pa rin!
Bayaran man ako, I will still say to you,
I'd rather be green than be blue!

If I were to live my whole life again,
I'd still want to be a LaSallista pa rin!
Bayaran man ako, I will still say to you,
I'd rather be green than be blue!

JV Casio's Time

dlsuadmu1

Joseph Evans Casio came at a not so auspicious time. The Green Archers was still feeling the pangs from their championship loss to bitter rivals, the Ateneo Blue Eagles, the previous season. And with a rookie-laden lineup which includes the former Red Cub, the Green Archers missed the UAAP Finals for the first time since 1994.

He came at a time when rookies were not given much hype as much as what we are seeing now. Nonetheless, JV as he has come to be known, quietly earned the praise not only of the Green supporters but also of the regular UAAP spectator. Despite the presence of a much vaunted rivals like Ateneo’s Chris Tiu and Ford Arao, Adamson’s Ken Bono, UP’s Marvin Cruz, JV romped off with the Rookie of the Year honors.

He came at a time when the Green Archers had the spectacular and flashy duo of Joseph Yeo and Macmac Cardona. For years, he played in the shadows of his superstar teammates. No complaints, no buts. He responded as a loyal team player. But the superstar in him is waiting to be unraveled. In the do-or-die Game 3 of the 2004 UAAP Championship Series vs. the FEU Tamaraws, JV nailed a crucial three-point shot in the dying seconds of the ballgame, reminiscent of Ren-Ren Ritualo’s gameturning triple in the 1998 Season.

Yes, JV is indeed the next Archer to watch. But just when JV’s star is starting to shine brightly, another controversy hit De La Salle that resulted in the one-year suspension of the Green Archers from the UAAP. Sadly, the clouds seemed to have dimmed JV’s star.

And in 2007, after a one-year hiatus from the UAAP, the De La Salle Green Archers vindicated their suspension and won the UAAP crown. JV Casio lived up to everyone’s hope and expectation and spearheaded the Green Archers’ fairy-tale win over the heavily favored UE Red Warriors. JV’s star is shining brighter than ever. He was named in the UAAP Mythical Team of Season 70 and Finals Most Valuable Player together with Cholo Villanueva. Despite all the accolades, JV remained the humble and quiet cager that he is.

JV vowed to return to lead DLSU in its quest for a back-to-back championship. He did not reneg on that promise. He took up Masters in Environmental Science and wore the Green and White jersey for the very last season. JV led the Archers and guided the young La Salle squad game in and game out. Delivering on his promise, the Green Archers’ team captain steered La Salle to its 13th finals appearance in 15 UAAP seasons.

No matter what the outcome of this year’s Finals will be, JV Casio is one superstar the entire Lasallian community will miss. His surname might have been an abbreviation of the constellation, Cassiopeia, which contains one of the brightest stars in the galaxy, because for sure, wherever Casio may be, his star will forever shine brightly.

Thank you JV.

2003

JV was already a regular fixture in the Archers’ rotation in his rookie year at a tender age of 16 and fresh out of San Beda High School.

As a freshman, JV proved that he can hang tough against the more-seasoned players of the league.

JV was never shy to hit the big shots since day one of his UAAP career.

JV was instrumental in leading the then rookie-laden Green Archers team to a respectable finish in 2003. He won the rookie of the year award on top of being one of the league leaders in the steals category.

2004

With a year of college ball experience tucked under his belt, JV was ready to assume an even bigger role in his sophomore year.

JV was among the key components in the Archers’ vaunted full court press.

JV played a significant role in the Archers’ victory over FEU in the 2004 championship series. He hit a clutch three-pointer in the dying seconds of the sudden death match that gave the lead and eventually the win.

With his oncourt brilliance and clutch performance all season long, JV was certainly not hounded by the so-called sophomore jinx.

2005

With the departure of Macmac Cardona, JV got even more minutes in the guard rotation.

JV developed his slashing ability to add another dimension to his game.

In most occasions, he played the point. He orchestrated the offense well as a back-up to TY Tang.

JV and the rest of the team had all reasons to celebrate as they booked another seat in the finals that year.

2007

Coming back from year’s absence due to suspension, JV and the Archers are determined to once again rise to the top.

A more confident JV displayed a new arsenal of moves from fade-away jumpers to cat-quick drives that baffled defenders to no end.

There was no stopping JV and the Archers from charging their way back to the finals after a one-year layoff.

Sweet vindication indeed.

2008

In his final playing year in the UAAP, JV in now the main man of the team being the most seasoned Archer.

JV took his game to a whole new level this season being the team’s primary offensive option.

Being the leader that he is, JV is the stabilizing force for the Archers this season.

JV will be remembered for his invaluable contributions to the team throughout his collegiate career. We hope that the fire and determination that he has always shown since his rookie year would inspire those who will be taking over his place in the seasons to come.

naiiyak ako habang binabasa ko 'to.

nalulungkot ako para kay JV.

waaahh..

as a team kasi, naniniwala ako na Ateneo talaga ang deserving manalo ngayong season. malaki ang in-improve nila from last year.

and as much as i'd miss seeing Chris Tiu play, Casio will also be a big loss in this league i love. but at least, panatag ang loob ko dahil alam kong pagkatapos nito, the future of JV Casio will be much, much brighter for him.
