Similar patterns woven into career of Tiu, Casio

They were top gunners and clutch players of two teams with long history of rivalry and the varsity careers of Ateneo's Chris Tiu and La Salle's JV Casio were somehow linked to the seething feud that ended another chapter Thursday.

Tiu and Casio first crossed paths in the UAAP in 2003 and parted ways in the just-concluded collegiate season ruled by Ateneo.

Casio, 22, has the slight edge in their statistical battle as he averaged 11.4 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.4 steals in five seasons.

His best effort came this year where he normed 17 points, 4.07 boards, 3.64 assists and 1.43 steals.

Tiu, 23, also compiled solid numbers - 9.5 points, 3.7 caroms and 2.1 assists - also in five seasons.

Like Casio, Tiu shone in his last season, firing personal highs 14.43 points, 6.07 rebounds and 3.64 assists. But it was the sweet-shooting Ateneo guard who came out triumphant when he helped power the Eagles to their first title in six years.

Interestingly, the two missed a season apiece with Tiu skipping the 2005 season to study in France and Casio out in 2006 because of La Salle's suspension.

The duo never missed the post season in their years with their respective teams with Casio finishing with a championship once, a runner-up thrice and a Final Four stint once. Tiu, on the other hand, also had one championship and one Final Four finish but had only two second place trophies.

But after wrapping up their collegiate careers, Tiu and Casio would soon start another chapter to their personal duel - in the Philippine Basketball League where they are expected to meet again.
